Sparkle is imaginably relatable to the life of Whitney Houston (Emma) one of its executive producers and characters. It’s a story based on reality rather than fiction. Emma being the Mother of three beautiful girls (Carmen Ejogo) Sisters (Tika Sumpter) Delores and (Jordin Sparks) Sparkle has the fear of her daughters following the wrong part in life.
Emma, being a former entertainer in her prime who has witnessed the danger and ill treatment done to female young rising singers in the music world, vows to protect her children from the world and music industry as she makes rules, curfew hours and a compulsory church attendance believing this will keep her daughters on track. Despite all her rules and protection, her youngest daughter (Jordin Sparks) Sparkle rises to ascend her mother’s glory, making Emma life a cautionary tale for her music career.
Meanwhile (Jordin Sparks) Sparkle being a naive, shy, timid, confused but talented teenage girl, falls in love with (Derek Luke) Stix Warren in midst of struggling to find her identity and the courage in pursuing her dreams. (Jordin Sparks) Sparkle is quite a unique character, as she display love, courage, commitment, obedient and sincerity in her role. A lovable sister to her siblings(Carmen Ejogo & Tika Sumpter), an obedient child to her mother, (Whitney Houston) an ambitious soul as she pursuit her dream career “singing” and the love of her life (Derek Luke) Stix Warren.
However, Whitney Houston (Emma) not being the star of the movie, the story revolves around her life, as she died not long after completing the movie. She presented us with her sweet vocals “his eyes is on the Sparrow” as she reflected on her past and the happenings around her, with her first daughter Sister (Carmen Ejogo) being sent to jail for killing her fiance Satin (Mike Epps) in self defense.
I totally love and admire the character of (Omari Hardwick) Levi. A determine hardworking young man, who doesn’t accept defeat, very ambitious yet lovable and commitment to his job. This is shown when (Mike Epps) Satin insulted him by snatching the only girl he loves (Carmen Ejogo) Sisters away from him, yet he resurface being an achiever, goal getter and a better version of himself. Showing off his wealth to Satin (Mike Epps) whose life has taken its down turn.
Emma’s greatest fear comes to play as her daughters known by their stage name as “Sister and her sisters” who are the stars of the movie “Sparkle” rebuke her of her controlling, selfish and overbearing attitude as they’re now grown up. With Sparkle moving out of the house in pursuit for her love and dreams, Sister being sent to jail and Delores returning back to medical school. Emma realizes her wrongs and tries to make amends.
Sparkle is undeniable fantastic, teachable, admirable, funny, dramatic, comic and a whole lot as it speaks to our day to days lives in different dimensions, yet simple.
